You need to know this story:
Chill Wills was drinking alone late one night at the Catfish Hut on Grapevine Lake and Dad was
sitting across the room with some work buddies having a good old time. Chill Wills sent the waiter
over to tell them he was Chill Wills and that they could come over and drink with him. Dad told the
waiter "you tell that SOB that I'm Stumpy Owens and if he wants to drink with me he can
come over here"!

Having read 'Boots" book I am glad my dad grew up in Cherokee 30 years after them Hammer
boys and that Askins kid. He would have been right in the midst of them and in more trouble than he
stirred up in Cherokee and Ingersol. My mother-in-law remembers all of them well! The Hammers and
Mr Askins that is. Their kind are missed and will be remembered only by these stories you have
taken the time to post. Thank you
